Charlie's Soap!

 SPOTLIGHT ON CHARLIE’S SOAP

Mayodan, North Carolina

In 1976, Charlie Sutherland, Junior, and his business partner were working for the yarn oil division (run by Charlie's dad) of a large textile yarn company, and they needed to find a soap to clean up the oils and other accumulated grime the yarn machines picked up. Rather than buy some, they started making it themselves on the sly in an old barn on his partner's dad's farm. Charlie came up with the final formula (he was a chemist after all). The stuff worked great, and they were in business. Charlie's dad used to say of the original cleaner, "It cleans everything from false teeth to diesel engines,” so they put that on their labels.

Eventually, his partner moved on, and Charlie built the company piece-by-piece, weathering the good times with the bad.  His son, Taylor, is now at the helm– primarily focused on the domestic market, and he is taking the company to new heights!  Charlie is still involved to a degree– he likes to keep his finger on the pulse of the company, and write an occasional blog on “Charlie’s Corner.”  His other two sons, James and Morgan, also work at the company. They act as a tag-team of sorts… James makes sure things are selling (International Sales & domestic bulk sales), Morgan makes sure they have something to sell (procurement), and James makes sure that what Morgan buys gets mixed properly.  Great teamwork guys!  Morgan also heads up the IT department for the company. In 1976, Charlie Sutherland, Junior, and his business partner were working for the yarn oil division (run by Charlie's dad) of a large textile yarn company, and they needed to find a soap to clean up the oils and other accumulated grime the yarn machines picked up. There are others behind the scenes that are critical as well: Jenny Craver keeps the books in tip-top shape. Terry Shumate keeps the trucks coming in on time with the raw materials James and Morgan need, and she keeps those boys in line too.  Sherry Stoval develops new domestic business and she keeps her eye on Taylor– he’s always up to something!  Cindy Priddy is where the rubber hits the road… she’s the one who makes sure the orders actually get shipped like they’re supposed to.  Last and far from least, the warehouse staff is made up of Dawn, John, Jason, and Havier; they pick and carefully pack every item that leaves the Charlie’s Soap facility.

Like Azure, the knowledge of Charlie’s Soap has spread mostly by word of mouth.  The company spent its time investing heavily in the quality of their products and the production, not on marketing or advertising.  In the end, that paid off because what developed was a network of customers committed and loyal to a product they trust beyond everything else. They are not swayed by any fad or wanna-be alternative that claims to be the best, because after using Charlie’s Soap, they know the truth!

What is the secret? Certainly the 3 ingredients are—the formulas are kept under lock and key.  However, what they do and do not do is evident.  First and foremost, the cleaners do two basic things:  They break the bonds of whatever soil is dirtying a thing, then they leave completely taking the soil with them.  There is no soap residue left behind at all, and clothes (or items) are left clean.  In fact, clothes get cleaner and softer the

Second, the people behind Charlie’s Soap are driven by a desire to leave the planet better than when they found it.  They want to make a better product that helps in its own way to make people better.  As Taylor Sutherland said, “We want to do our part to save the planet and improve peoples’ lives at the same time.”  On a funny side note (and not less than half truth!), he also said that he and his dad always joke that they are, “big picture people who solve tomorrow’s problems over lunch every day.”  That is one thing you will find with those behind Charlie’s Soap– they know how to make cleaning things fun!  Their positive and honest attitudes are truly infectious.  longer they are washed with Charlie’s Soap as any remaining residue from other products leaves the material.
